Guest Choreographer 2017 - Les Italiens de l'Opéra de Paris
Matteo Levaggi studied at the ballet school of Liliana Cosi in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and started working as a dancer with Balletto Teatro di Torino in 1993, where many guest choreographers created works for him, including Karole Armitage and Luca Veggetti. In 1997 he joined Aterballetto under the direction of Mauro Bigonzetti. From 2000 to 2013 he was resident choreographer and co-director of Balletto Teatro di Torino, one of the most important Italian dance companies, based in Turin, with a structure of 6-10 dancers, which received in 2008 the Prix Compagnie d'Auteur by Les Étoiles de Ballet2000, Palais des Festivals, Cannes.
From 2009 to 2013 he was co-director for the dance season at Lavanderia a Vapore, based in Collegno, Turin (IT). This first Italian Dance House was created and supported by Piedmont Region, Italian Ministry of Culture (MIBAC), Municipality of Collegno, and Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino, in collaboration with Biennale de la Danse de Lyon (Artistic Director Guy Darmet).
His most evident ambition is an overall vision of dance as part of the Art nourishment which is essential to the human being.
His eclectic choices have included collaborations with great contemporary composers such as Giovanni Sollima, who created the music for his tribute ballet to the 17th century Italian painter Caravaggio in 2004, and music by Heiner Goebbels, Béla Bartók, Carlo Boccadoro, as well as electronic music composers such as Scanner, Autechre, Pan Sonic.
In 2005 he created La Bottega Fantastica (Rossini/Respighi),and Drowning by Numbers with music by Michael Nyman for the ballet company of Arena di Verona, and his
duet Largo, with music by Dmitri Shostakovich, joined Le Grand Théâtre de Genève repertoire.
Ismael Ivo invited him to present a creation at 2006 Venice Biennale of Dance, and at 2007 Music Biennial in Zagreb.
Also, in 2007 he started his collaboration with Italian visual artists Corpicrudi (a duo formed by Samantha Stella and Sergio Frazzingaro) setting a trilogy ballet called Primo Toccare (First Touch) with premières at 2008 Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, Joyce Theater in New York (2009) and 2010 BolzanoDanza. The creation was performed in many Italian and international theaters, including Pavillon Noir in Aix-en-Provence and 2011 Belgrade Dance Festival, and the satellite TV channel Sky Classica dedicated a documentary on it in May 2011.
His second collaboration with Corpicrudi, Le Vergini (The Virgins), premièred at 2011 International Ballet Fest of Miami, and at 2011 MilanOltre Festival in a special ballet monography dedicated to the work of Karole Armitage and Matteo Levaggi.
In 2013 his ballet Caravaggio had its Usa première at LACMA Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and was included in Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company
In 2014 the Italian film director Davide Ferrario made a film based on the Sexxx choreography by Levaggi and on Preludio per una Sinfonia in Nero (Prelude for a Symphony in Black) by Levaggi | Corpicrudi which premièred at 2014 MilanOltre festival.
Also, in 2014 he started his freelance career and was selected by New York Choreographic Institute, directed by Peter Martins, to present his Sensorium ballet (original music by Lamberto Curtoni), with dancers by New York City Ballet. His creation Preludio per una Sinfonia in Nero (Prelude for a Symphony in Black) had its Usa première at Ace Museum for 2014 Los Angeles Fashion Week in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Office, while his ballet Punto d'azione (Action Point), a tribute to the music of great Italian composer Ennio Morricone, premièred in November 2014 with Maggio Danza – Florence Opera House.

During his 5 years co direction (2009-2013) for the dance season at Lavanderia a vapore, he invited some of the most important international dance companies, including Random Dance| Wayne McGregor, La La La Human Steps, Armitage Gone Dance!, Ballet Preljocaj, Alonzo King|Lines Ballet, Louis Lecavallier, The Bang Group, Union Tanguera.
Also, the structure presented performances by international musicians and composers such as Michael Nyman and Sentieri Selvaggi and collaborations with contemporary visual artists such as Davide Balliano (Robert Wilson and Marina Abramovic collaborator).
